Hippocampus angustus, commonly known as the Narrow-bellied Seahorse, is a fascinating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its slender body and graceful movements. This medium-sized seahorse is best suited to dedicated hobbyists with experience in maintaining delicate marine fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to their specialised dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, Hippocampus angustus can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid fast or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food or cause stress.
Diet: Carnivorous, requiring a diet of live or frozen mysis shrimp and other suitable small crustaceans. Frequent, small feedings throughout the day are ideal to meet their nutritional needs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should have gentle water flow and plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, seagrass, or artificial structures to allow the seahorse to anchor itself.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity around 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality with low nitrates.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Place seahorses in a quiet area of the tank away from strong currents and aggressive tank mates.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, their slow feeding habits mean they may struggle in heavily stocked reef tanks with fast feeders.
Hippocampus angustus is a captivating addition to specialised marine aquariums, offering a unique display of seahorse behaviour and elegance when cared for properly.
