Lane Snapper (Lutjanus synagris) – Tank-Bred Extra Large
The Lane Snapper is a visually impressive marine fish known for its vibrant red and yellow markings and active swimming behaviour. This extra large, tank-bred specimen is ideal for marine aquarists seeking a robust and striking addition to a suitably sized aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. Due to its size and active nature, this species requires careful husbandry and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Lane Snappers are generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as they mature. They can be kept with other robust fish species but may prey on smaller tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and active.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to simulate natural reef environments and allow the snapper to establish territories.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safety: No. Lane Snappers are predatory and will likely consume small invertebrates and fish, making them unsuitable for reef tanks.
