The Toxotes jaculatrix, commonly known as the Archerfish, is a captivating marine species renowned for its remarkable ability to shoot jets of water to knock insects off overhanging vegetation. This behaviour makes it a fascinating addition to a well-established marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Archerfish require stable water conditions and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be skittish. Best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. In captivity, provide a varied diet including live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small crustaceans. Supplement with high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 US gallons) to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural conditions is recommended.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with access to open swimming areas and some shaded regions or floating plants to simulate natural habitat.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Providing a secure lid is essential as Archerfish are known to jump. Regular water changes and stable parameters will ensure a healthy environment for this unique species.
