The Medium Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) is a remarkable species famed for its ability to shoot jets of water to knock insects and prey into the water. This behaviour makes it a fascinating addition to a marine or brackish aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Archerfish require stable water parameters and a suitably sized tank to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be skittish. Best kept with non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Prefers live or frozen foods such as insects, small crustaceans, and specialised pellets. Occasional feeding of live insects above the water surface can stimulate natural hunting behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Water Parameters: Archerfish thrive in brackish to marine conditions. A specific gravity of 1.005 to 1.020 is suitable, with stable temperature between 24-28°C and pH 7.5-8.5.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle water flow are ideal to mimic their natural environment.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with a secure lid to prevent jumping.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including coastal waters and estuaries.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in captivity.
Due to their specialised care requirements and unique behaviour, the Medium Archerfish is best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining brackish or marine systems.
