The Small Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) is renowned for its remarkable ability to hunt by shooting jets of water to knock insects and other prey into the water. This intriguing behaviour makes it a standout addition to a suitably sized marine or brackish aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Archerfish require stable water parameters and a carefully maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be skittish. Best kept with non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Prefers live or frozen foods such as insects, small crustaceans, and specialised pellets. Feeding live insects above the water surface encourages natural hunting behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and accommodate their active nature.
Water Parameters: Archerfish thrive in brackish to marine conditions with a salinity range of 1.005 to 1.020 specific gravity. Stable temperature between 24-28°C (75-82°F) is recommended.
Compatibility: Suitable tankmates include peaceful brackish or marine species that do not outcompete for food or display aggressive behaviour.
Additional Notes: Provide floating plants or structures to simulate their natural hunting environment. Ensure the aquarium is covered as Archerfish are known to jump.
