The Sufflamen chrysopterum, commonly known as the Large Triggerfish, is a visually impressive species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This fish displays vibrant colours and distinctive markings, making it a standout specimen in any large marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a spacious aquarium due to its size and activity level.
Temperament and Compatibility: Sufflamen chrysopterum is known for a semi-aggressive temperament. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best housed with robust, similarly sized fish and should not be kept with small, delicate species or invertebrates.
Diet: This triggerfish is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding of a diverse diet supports its health and vibrant colours.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: This species is not reef safe as it may prey on invertebrates and disturb corals.
With proper care and a suitable environment, the Sufflamen chrysopterum can be a rewarding and striking addition to a marine aquarium.
