The Sargocentron coruscum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bright red body and prominent eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This medium-sized fish is best suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires specific care and tank conditions to thrive.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Squirrelfish is sensitive to water quality and requires a stable environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done primarily in the evening or at night to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred, with dimmer conditions during feeding times to accommodate nocturnal behaviour.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to allow the fish to hide during daylight hours. Placement should prioritise secure shelters and shaded areas.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Squirrelfish may prey on small invertebrates and shrimp.
