Urolophus halleri, commonly known as the Round Stingray, is a fascinating species of ray prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This small to medium-sized ray is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 gallons (approximately 680 litres) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and a suitable environment. A fine sandy substrate is essential to mimic their natural habitat and prevent injury to their delicate undersides.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy. Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates that will not harass or outcompete them for food. Avoid housing with small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous diet consisting mainly of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised ray pellets. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure the ray receives adequate nutrition.
Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity around 1.023-1.025, and excellent water quality maintained through efficient filtration and regular water changes.
Special Care: Rays are sensitive to poor water quality and require a well-maintained aquarium. Regular monitoring and maintenance are crucial. Provide hiding spots and gentle water flow to reduce stress.
