The Alectis indica, or Indian Threadfish, is a captivating medium-sized marine fish prized for its unique shape and iridescent colouring. Belonging to the Carangidae family, it is a robust and active species that can make a striking addition to large marine aquaria.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Indian Threadfish are generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially as they mature. They are compatible with other large, robust fish but should not be housed with small, timid species that may be bullied or eaten.
Diet: Alectis indica is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is advised. Provide ample open swimming space with some sturdy rockwork for shelter. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics their natural coastal and reef-edge habitats.
Origin: Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 70 cm in captivity, though typically smaller in aquarium settings.
