Gnathanodon speciosus, commonly called the Golden Trevally, is a visually captivating member of the Carangidae family. This large, active predator is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with ample tank space.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and activity level.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or smaller fish. Best kept singly or in very large tanks with compatible species.
Diet: Carnivorous – feeds on a variety of meaty foods including crustaceans, small fish, and prepared marine carnivore diets.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 500 litres (approximately 130 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and growth potential.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong flow mimicking natural reef or coastal environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide open swimming areas with some rockwork or structures for shelter and territory establishment.
Origin: Tropical and subtropical coastal waters worldwide, including the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 90 cm in the wild; in captivity, expect sizes up to 60-70 cm depending on tank conditions.
Reef Safe: With Caution – may prey on smaller reef inhabitants; not recommended for reef tanks with small invertebrates or fish.
Due to their size and active nature, Golden Trevally require a well-established, spacious marine aquarium with stable water parameters. Regular feeding with high-quality meaty foods will support their health and vibrant coloration. Compatibility with other large, robust fish species is advised to reduce stress and aggression.
