Haemulon plumierii, commonly referred to as the French Grunt, is a striking snapper species native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This extra large specimen is perfect for experienced marine aquarists with spacious tanks, offering vibrant colouration and active schooling behaviour that enlivens any large aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to the species’ size and activity level.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show mild territorial behaviour, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept in groups to mimic natural schooling behaviour.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a variety of meaty foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is advised.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and schooling nature.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, they may disturb smaller invertebrates or fragile reef structures due to their size and activity.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, preferably in groups to encourage natural schooling behaviour.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Ensure stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and excellent water quality to maintain health and vibrancy.
