Stonogobiops nematodes, commonly called the filamented prawn goby, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This small goby is renowned for its symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimps, sharing burrows and displaying fascinating behaviours that add interest to reef tanks.
These gobies are peaceful and generally compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates. They thrive best in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock and sandy substrate to accommodate their burrowing habits. Providing a minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended to ensure adequate space and stable water conditions.
Dietarily, Stonogobiops nematodes are carnivorous and will accept a variety of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding should be done once or twice daily to maintain optimal health.
Water parameters should be kept stable with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity around 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow to mimic their natural reef environment. Lighting requirements are not demanding, but moderate lighting will support the overall aquarium ecosystem.
When introducing Stonogobiops nematodes, it is best to add them alongside their pistol shrimp partners if possible, as this enhances their natural behaviour and wellbeing. They are reef safe and can be kept with corals and invertebrates without issue.
