Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus, commonly called the Chevron Tang, is a striking addition to any marine aquarium. Recognisable by its chevron-like markings and vibrant blue hues, this tang is both visually appealing and functional, as it grazes on detritus and algae, helping to maintain a clean tank environment.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) minimum, with larger tanks preferred to accommodate swimming behaviour and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Generally reef safe but may nip at some sessile invertebrates or soft corals if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to support health and activity.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are essential for this active species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
When introducing the Chevron Tang, acclimate slowly to reduce stress. Maintain excellent water quality with regular monitoring of nitrate and phosphate levels to support health and vibrant coloration.
