The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is a visually stunning surgeonfish native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Known for its deep purple body and contrasting yellow tail, this species adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Purple Tang requires stable water conditions and a spacious tank to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spaces.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty treats can be offered.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming room and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safe: Yes, compatible with most reef setups but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate active swimming behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Purple Tang is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and activity.
