Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular large clam prized for its distinctive ridged mantle and vibrant colours. This premium specimen, sized between 12-15cm, is suitable for experienced marine aquarists with established reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide or strong LED systems is essential to promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid mantle damage while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area. Avoid direct strong currents and ensure the clam is secure to prevent movement.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic algae, but will benefit from occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Suitable for reef tanks with peaceful tankmates.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to maintain stable water quality and provide adequate space.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in captivity under optimal conditions.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is recommended to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
