Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular addition to any mature marine aquarium. This premium 11cm specimen features the characteristic scaly protrusions on its mantle, which display vibrant colours ranging from greens to blues and browns, making it a captivating focal point.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna squamosa thrives under moderate to strong lighting, ideally provided by quality LED or T5 aquarium lights that support photosynthesis. It relies heavily on its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae for nutrition but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods to promote growth and vitality.
Water parameters should be kept stable, with temperature between 24-28°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and calcium levels maintained around 400-450 ppm to support shell development. Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure adequate gas exchange without causing mantle retraction.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle. Placement on a stable substrate or rockwork is essential to prevent dislodgement.
Regular monitoring of water quality and gentle acclimation are recommended to ensure the health and longevity of your Tridacna squamosa.
