Tridacna squamosina, known as the Scaly Giant Clam, is a visually captivating bivalve prized in marine reef aquariums for its distinctive scaly mantle and vibrant colours. At 7cm, this clam is suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists who can provide the stable environment it requires.
Care and Husbandry: This species thrives under strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Moderate to strong, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while ensuring adequate gas exchange.
Feeding is generally not necessary if lighting is sufficient; however, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote optimal health and growth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna squamosina is reef safe and peaceful, making it compatible with most reef inhabitants. Care should be taken to avoid placing it near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam bases in the lower to middle sections of the tank where lighting is strong but not direct to avoid bleaching.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.024-1.026 SG, and stable calcium and alkalinity levels to support shell growth.
With proper care, Tridacna squamosina can be a stunning and long-lived addition to a mature reef aquarium.
