Stylophora pistillata (Green Polyp) is a captivating small polyp stony (SPS) coral prized for its dense branching structure and vivid green polyps. This medium-sized specimen is perfect for marine aquarists looking to enhance their reef tanks with a hardy and visually striking SPS coral.
Lighting Requirements: This coral thrives under moderate to high lighting, ideally provided by LED or T5 fixtures designed for reef aquaria. Ensure stable PAR levels to promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow: Strong, turbulent water flow is essential to prevent detritus accumulation and to facilitate nutrient exchange. Position the coral where it can receive indirect but consistent water movement.
Placement: Place the Stylophora pistillata in the mid to upper regions of the tank, allowing sufficient space from neighbouring corals to avoid aggressive interactions. This species can be sensitive to chemical warfare, so maintain at least 5cm clearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters typical of SPS corals: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.025-1.026, and low nutrient levels.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near highly aggressive corals. Compatible with most reef inhabitants when given proper space.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral foods.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water chemistry and maintaining stable conditions will ensure optimal health and growth. Fragging is possible but should be done carefully due to the coral’s branching nature.
