The Blue Scaly Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a spectacular addition to any marine reef aquarium, known for its striking blue mantle and unique scaly shell texture. At approximately 11cm, this clam is a medium-sized specimen that can become a focal point in your tank.
Care Requirements: This species thrives under strong, full-spectrum lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote optimal health and growth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Blue Scaly Clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Avoid placing near corals or other invertebrates that may compete for space or light.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, and low nutrient levels to prevent algae overgrowth.
