The Tridacna Crocea clam, often referred to as the boring clam, is a popular choice among marine aquarium hobbyists due to its striking mantle patterns and relatively small size. This Grade A specimen measures approximately 13cm, making it suitable for established reef tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna Crocea requires stable water parameters with a minimum tank size of 100 litres to ensure adequate space and water quality. They thrive under moderate to high lighting conditions, as they rely heavily on photosynthesis through their symbiotic zooxanthellae. Providing moderate water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding strong currents that may cause stress.
Placement should be on a stable rock or substrate where the clam can securely attach itself. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or invertebrates that may damage its delicate mantle tissue.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna Crocea benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions or during acclimation.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is considered reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam.
