Astralium calcar is a marine gastropod mollusc prized for its distinctive, sculptured shell and effective algae grazing. This species is well-suited to reef aquariums where it contributes to natural algae control and substrate maintenance.
Care and Husbandry: Astralium calcar requires stable water parameters typical of reef systems, including a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and well-oxygenated water. It thrives in tanks with moderate to strong water flow and benefits from a varied diet primarily consisting of natural algae growth. Supplementary feeding with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as spinach or seaweed is recommended if natural algae is insufficient.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants. It is considered reef safe, as it does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates. However, care should be taken when housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may prey on snails.
Placement: Place Astralium calcar on live rock or substrate where algae growth is present. It is a mobile grazer and will roam the tank searching for food.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality and ensuring adequate calcium levels will support healthy shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry to prevent stress.
