Wunderpus photogenicus is a remarkable cephalopod species prized for its distinctive colour patterns and dynamic behaviour. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is a master of camouflage and displays extraordinary intelligence, making it a fascinating addition to a specialised marine aquarium.
Care Level: Due to its specialised needs and sensitivity, the Wunderpus photogenicus is recommended for advanced aquarists with experience in cephalopod husbandry.
Feeding: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small crustaceans and molluscs. In captivity, a diet of live or frozen shrimp, crabs, and other meaty marine fare is essential. Feeding should be frequent but carefully monitored to maintain water quality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Wunderpus is generally solitary and can be aggressive towards conspecifics or other cephalopods. It is best kept singly in a species-specific tank or with very carefully selected tank mates. It is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide ample space for exploration and hiding. The aquarium should have a secure lid to prevent escape, as cephalopods are known escape artists. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for health.
Environment: Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places to mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress. Low to moderate lighting is preferred to simulate its natural environment.
Additional Notes: Regular water changes and excellent filtration are critical due to the species’ sensitivity to water quality. Handling should be minimised to reduce stress and potential injury.
