Stenopus zanzibaricus is a captivating species of banded coral shrimp prized for its bold red and white banded claws and elegant appearance. This invertebrate is a fascinating addition to marine reef tanks, offering both visual appeal and functional benefits such as scavenging detritus.
Care and Husbandry: This species thrives in well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters. Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH around 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure oxygenation without stressing the shrimp.
Feeding: Stenopus zanzibaricus is omnivorous and will accept a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised invertebrate pellets. Supplement feeding is recommended to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally peaceful, this shrimp can coexist with a variety of reef-safe tank mates but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally nip at small, slow-moving invertebrates.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding spots to mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress. This also allows it to establish territory and forage effectively.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
