Hymenocera picta, commonly known as the Harlequin Shrimp, is a visually stunning marine invertebrate prized for its unique colouration and specialised diet. Available in various sizes, this species is a fascinating addition to mature reef aquariums.
Feeding: Harlequin Shrimp are obligate predators, primarily feeding on starfish, especially the common sea star species. They require a steady supply of live or fresh starfish to thrive. Due to their specialised diet, they are best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide appropriate food consistently.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: While generally peaceful, Hymenocera picta should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates. They are considered reef safe with caution as they do not harm corals but may prey on starfish and other echinoderms present in the aquarium.
Care Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters typical of reef environments: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good water quality are essential. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and hunting grounds.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and maintain water quality.
Additional Notes: Due to their specialised diet and sensitivity, Harlequin Shrimp are not recommended for beginner marine aquarists. Regular observation and careful feeding are critical to their health and longevity.
