Panulirus versicolor, commonly known as the Painted Spiny Lobster, is a spectacular addition to larger marine aquariums. This extra large specimen displays vibrant colours and intricate patterns, making it a standout invertebrate for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and careful feeding.
Diet: Omnivorous scavenger. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped fish, shrimp, and molluscs, as well as sinking pellets designed for crustaceans. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful with other invertebrates but may prey on small, slow-moving tankmates. Avoid housing with small fish or delicate invertebrates. Best kept with robust tankmates.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically destructive to corals, it may disturb sessile invertebrates or small fish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres recommended to provide ample space and hiding places. Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter, especially during moulting periods.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Best placed in the lower to middle regions of the tank where it can forage and find shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (body length).
