Panulirus versicolor, or the Painted Spiny Lobster, is a visually stunning crustacean prized in marine aquaria for its vibrant blue, green, and purple hues. This medium-sized species is nocturnal and best housed in a well-established tank with plenty of hiding places.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and secure tank lids to prevent escape.
Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped shrimp, fish, and molluscs, alongside sinking pellets or flakes. Feeding should occur in the evening to align with natural activity patterns.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other invertebrates but may prey on small or slow-moving tankmates. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may occasionally nip at sessile invertebrates or slow-moving fish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres recommended. Provide ample rockwork and crevices for shelter. Secure lids are essential as they are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm in length.
