Panulirus ornatus, known as the Ornate Spiny Lobster, is a visually impressive crustacean prized in marine aquaria for its vibrant colours and intricate patterns. This small variant is suitable for advanced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Diet: Omnivorous scavenger. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped fish, shrimp, molluscs, and specialised crustacean pellets. Supplement with algae or vegetable matter occasionally.
Compatibility: Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small, slow-moving fish or invertebrates that may be preyed upon. Territorial behaviour means only one per tank unless very large aquarium.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and sessile animals. Not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres recommended to provide ample hiding spaces and roaming area. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and crevices.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Bottom-dwelling, nocturnal. Provide shaded areas and caves for daytime hiding.
Origin: Native to Indo-Pacific regions, including northern Australia and Southeast Asia.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in length, though this small variant will be smaller.
