Heteractis magnifica, commonly known as the Magnificent Sea Anemone, is a spectacular invertebrate prized for its vibrant tentacles and symbiotic relationship with various clownfish species. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care requirements.
Feeding: While Heteractis magnifica derives nutrition from photosynthetic zooxanthellae within its tissues, supplemental feeding is essential for optimal health. Offer meaty foods such as finely chopped shrimp, fish, or specialised anemone pellets 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: This anemone is generally reef safe but should be kept with caution. It can host clownfish species, which benefit from its protection. Avoid housing with aggressive or anemone-eating fish. Careful placement away from delicate corals is advised to prevent stinging.
Care Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and excellent water quality. Moderate to strong lighting is necessary to support its symbiotic algae, and moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Secure the anemone on a stable rock or substrate area where it can attach firmly. Ensure it has enough space to expand fully without contacting other corals or invertebrates.
With proper care, the Magnificent Sea Anemone can be a captivating centrepiece in a mature reef aquarium.
