Heteractis magnifica, commonly known as the Magnificent Sea Anemone, is a captivating large anemone prized in marine aquaria for its vibrant tentacles and symbiotic relationships with clownfish species. This anemone can reach impressive sizes and adds dynamic movement and colour to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and attentive husbandry.
Feeding: While Heteractis magnifica obtains nutrients through photosynthesis via its symbiotic zooxanthellae, it benefits from supplemental feeding. Offer meaty foods such as finely chopped shrimp, fish, or specialised anemone pellets 1-2 times per week to promote health and growth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, but caution is advised as its long tentacles can sting nearby corals and invertebrates. It hosts certain clownfish species, which can be introduced once the anemone is well established.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to accommodate its potential growth and provide stable water conditions. Moderate lighting that supports photosynthesis and moderate water flow to prevent detritus accumulation without causing stress are ideal.
Placement: Position on a stable rock or substrate area with enough space to expand fully without touching other corals or anemones.
With proper care, the Magnificent Sea Anemone can be a spectacular centrepiece in a mature marine aquarium.
