Valenciennea muralis, commonly known as the Mural Goby, is a peaceful and active sand-sifting fish that makes an excellent addition to marine aquariums with sandy substrates. Sold as a pair, these gobies work together to aerate and clean the sand bed, helping to maintain a healthy environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Valenciennea muralis is known for its calm and non-aggressive nature, making it suitable for community reef tanks. They coexist well with other peaceful fish and invertebrates but may become territorial towards conspecifics if kept in insufficient space.
Diet: These gobies primarily feed on small invertebrates and detritus found within the sand. In captivity, they accept a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality sinking pellets or granules designed for carnivorous marine fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for digging and territory establishment. A deep sandy substrate of at least 5 cm is essential to allow natural burrowing behaviour. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums are ideal.
Care Level: Moderate. Valenciennea muralis requires a well-established aquarium with stable water quality and a suitable sandy substrate.
Additional Notes: Ensure the tank is securely covered as these gobies are known jumpers. Providing plenty of live rock and hiding places will help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
