Valenciennea helsdingenii, commonly known as Helsdingen’s Goby, is a striking and peaceful marine fish prized for its sand-sifting behaviour and elegant appearance. This medium to large-sized goby is an excellent addition to established reef aquariums with ample sandy substrate.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community reef tanks with other non-territorial species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised sinking pellets. They sift through the sand to find detritus and microfauna.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and substrate depth for burrowing.
Reef Safe: Yes. Compatible with corals and invertebrates, provided the tank is mature and stable.
Lighting Requirements: Standard reef lighting is suitable; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide a deep sandy substrate (at least 5 cm) to allow natural sand-sifting and burrowing behaviour. Decorate with live rock to offer hiding spots and territory boundaries.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm in length.
Helsdingen’s Goby is a fascinating species that helps maintain substrate cleanliness while adding activity and interest to the lower levels of the aquarium. It is best kept singly or in pairs unless the tank is very large to avoid territorial disputes.
