Valenciennea helsdingenii, or Helsdingen’s Goby, is a peaceful and active sand-sifting goby native to the Indo-Pacific region. This species is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its substrate-cleaning behaviour and gentle temperament.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community reef tanks with other non-territorial fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, supplemented with sinking pellets or flakes designed for gobies.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide ample sand bed for burrowing and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide a deep, fine sand substrate (at least 5cm) to allow natural sand-sifting behaviour. Include live rock for shelter and territory.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
Valenciennea helsdingenii is reef safe and compatible with a wide range of peaceful marine species. It is best kept singly or in mated pairs to avoid territorial disputes. Regular feeding and a stable environment will ensure this goby thrives and contributes to the health of your aquarium substrate.
