The Arothron mappa, commonly known as the Map Puffer, is a visually captivating species prized for its intricate maze-like patterning and robust size. This Extra Extra Large (XXL) specimen is ideal for experienced marine aquarists with spacious tanks.
Care Level: Advanced. Due to their size and specific dietary needs, Arothron mappa require dedicated care and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving tankmates. Best kept with robust, non-aggressive species. Avoid small invertebrates and fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous and omnivorous tendencies. Feed a varied diet including hard-shelled foods such as molluscs and crustaceans to help wear down their continuously growing teeth, alongside frozen or fresh seafood and specialised pellets.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 300 litres recommended to accommodate their adult size and swimming needs. Provide plenty of hiding places and open swimming areas.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so reef compatibility is limited.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm in length.
