The Arothron diadematus is a medium-sized pufferfish prized for its striking appearance and engaging behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements and temperament.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving tankmates. It is advisable to keep this species either singly or with robust, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with small, delicate species that may be harassed.
Diet: Arothron diadematus is carnivorous and requires a varied diet including hard-shelled foods such as molluscs and crustaceans to help wear down its continuously growing teeth. Supplement with frozen or live seafood like shrimp, squid, and mussels.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural habitat and reduce stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Reef Safety: With Caution – This species may nip at invertebrates and corals, so it is not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Additional Notes: Pufferfish are known for their ability to inflate when stressed, so handle with care and avoid sudden changes in environment. Regular observation is important to detect any health issues early.
