Rhinecanthus verrucosus, commonly known as the Warty Triggerfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its vibrant colours and distinctive markings. This small triggerfish is suitable for experienced hobbyists who can provide the appropriate environment and care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Rhinecanthus verrucosus is moderately aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar-shaped fish. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium. Compatibility with other species depends on tank size and individual temperament; avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress or injury.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas. Maintain stable water parameters typical of a marine environment: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting is sufficient, as this species does not have specialised lighting needs. Moderate water flow is recommended to simulate natural reef conditions without causing excessive stress.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Rhinecanthus verrucosus may nip at invertebrates and small fish, so it is not considered fully reef safe. Avoid housing with delicate corals or small invertebrates.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 inches).
