The Rhinecanthus rectangulus, commonly referred to as the Picasso Triggerfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold, geometric patterns and vibrant colours. This large triggerfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its territorial nature and specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Rhinecanthus rectangulus is known for its semi-aggressive temperament, especially as it matures. It can be territorial and may show aggression towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is recommended to keep this species either singly or with robust, similarly sized fish. Avoid housing with small, timid, or slow-moving species.
Diet: This triggerfish is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised marine carnivore pellets. Regular feeding of high-quality protein-rich foods will support vibrant colouration and health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its size and activity level, a minimum tank volume of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended, with larger tanks preferred to accommodate its territorial behaviour and swimming needs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment. Ensure the tank has secure lids as triggerfish are known jumpers.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including reefs around Hawaii and the central Pacific.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
