The Dusky Triggerfish (Pseudobalistes fuscus) is a bold and visually striking species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its robust body and dusky coloration, this triggerfish is best suited to large, mature aquariums due to its size and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a spacious tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Dusky Triggerfish is known for its territorial and sometimes aggressive behaviour, particularly towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best housed with similarly sized or robust fish to minimise conflict. Avoid keeping with small, delicate, or slow-moving species.
Diet: This omnivorous fish benefits from a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine fish foods. Supplement with occasional vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended for juveniles, with larger tanks preferred for extra-large specimens to provide ample swimming space and territory. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically coral predators, Dusky Triggerfish may disturb invertebrates and smaller reef inhabitants. Careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm in length.
