Balistes capriscus, commonly known as the Grey Triggerfish, is a captivating large triggerfish species prized for its distinctive shape and bold personality. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, it is a popular choice for experienced marine aquarists seeking a robust and engaging fish.
Care Level: This species is best suited to advanced hobbyists due to its size and temperament.
Temperament and Compatibility: Grey Triggerfish are semi-aggressive and territorial. They may harass smaller or more passive tankmates, so compatibility should be carefully considered. Avoid housing with very small or delicate fish. Suitable tankmates include other large, robust species that can tolerate their assertive nature.
Diet: Omnivorous in the wild, Balistes capriscus thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding of high-quality frozen or live foods will support optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their potential size (up to 60 cm in the wild, though typically smaller in captivity), a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. A well-structured aquascape with plenty of hiding places and robust rockwork is essential.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are critical to support this species’ health.
Reef Safety: With Caution. Grey Triggerfish may nip at invertebrates and corals, so they are generally not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
