The Balistes capriscus, or Grey Triggerfish, is a striking and robust species native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This medium-sized triggerfish is popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts who have the space and experience to meet its care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Grey Triggerfish are known for their bold and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. They are best kept with similarly sized or larger fish that can tolerate their assertive nature. Avoid housing with small, timid species or invertebrates, as they may be harassed or eaten.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding of high-quality frozen or fresh seafood will ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. A well-structured aquascape with plenty of hiding places and robust rockwork is essential.
Water Parameters and Care: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural environment.
Reef Compatibility: Not reef safe. This species may nip at corals and invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef tanks.
