Taenianotus triacanthus, commonly known as the Pink or Red Leaf Scorpionfish, is a fascinating species prized for its distinctive flattened body and cryptic, leaf-like appearance. This fish is an excellent choice for experienced marine aquarists seeking a unique predator with intriguing behaviour.
Appearance and Size: The Pink/Red variant displays vibrant hues ranging from soft pink to deep red, often with mottled patterns that enhance its camouflage. It can grow up to approximately 10 cm in length, though sizes vary depending on the specimen.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally solitary and territorial. It is predatory but not aggressive towards similarly sized or larger fish. However, it should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates, as it may prey on them. Suitable tankmates include larger, peaceful fish that are not small enough to be considered prey.
Diet: Taenianotus triacanthus is a carnivorous ambush predator, feeding primarily on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, it requires a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush hunting. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are important for optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so it is best kept in fish-only or mixed tanks without vulnerable reef inhabitants.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity to water quality, this species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
