Synanceia verrucosa, commonly referred to as the Warty Stonefish, is one of the most fascinating and venomous scorpionfish species available to marine aquarium hobbyists. Its remarkable camouflage and distinctive warty texture make it a striking addition to a well-established marine tank.
Care Level: This species is recommended for advanced aquarists due to its venomous spines and specialised care needs. Handling should be done with extreme caution.
Temperament and Compatibility: Synanceia verrucosa is generally sedentary and territorial. It is best kept singly or with non-aggressive tank mates that are too large to be considered prey. Avoid housing with small or delicate fish, as it may view them as food.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this stonefish feeds primarily on live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, crustaceans, and shrimp. Feeding should be done carefully to avoid injury to the fish or aquarist.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow are ideal to mimic its natural reef environment and reduce stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock or reef structures to allow the stonefish to camouflage and ambush prey. Ensure the substrate is sandy or fine gravel to prevent injury.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 35 cm in length.
Important Note: Synanceia verrucosa possesses highly venomous spines capable of delivering painful stings. Always use protective equipment when performing maintenance or handling.
