Pterois volitans, commonly known as the Red Lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish renowned for its elongated, venomous fin rays and striking red and white banding. This Extra Extra Large specimen is a captivating centrepiece for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts.
Care Level: Due to its venomous spines and specialised care requirements, the Red Lionfish is recommended for experienced hobbyists only.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Red Lionfish is a predatory species with a generally solitary nature. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, which it may view as prey. It is best housed with larger, robust tank mates that are not small enough to be eaten. Avoid keeping with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Pterois volitans thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised carnivore pellets. Feeding should be offered 2-3 times per week to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum aquarium volume of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking natural reef conditions. Water flow should be moderate to strong to simulate the species’ natural habitat and ensure good water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to allow the lionfish to establish territories and feel secure. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, though now invasive in some areas.
