The Pterois volitans, commonly known as the Red Lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish species prized for its dramatic fins and striking colouration. This extra large specimen is ideal for experienced marine aquarists with mature tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to their venomous spines and specialised diet, they require careful husbandry and handling.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pterois volitans is generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, which it may prey upon. It is not reef safe and should not be kept with small or slow-moving tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and shrimp. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Handling: Exercise caution when handling due to venomous dorsal spines which can cause painful stings.
This extra large Pterois volitans is a captivating centrepiece fish for suitably sized marine aquariums, combining beauty with a need for responsible care.
