Pterois volitans, commonly known as the lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish species prized in marine aquaria for its dramatic appearance and unique behaviour. This small-sized specimen is ideal for hobbyists with experience in handling venomous fish and maintaining stable marine environments.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its venomous spines and specific dietary needs, this species is recommended for aquarists familiar with marine predatory fish.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pterois volitans is generally solitary and can be territorial. It is predatory and may consume smaller tankmates, so compatibility with similarly sized or larger peaceful fish is advised. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is essential to provide adequate swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and resting spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: No. Due to its predatory nature and venomous spines, Pterois volitans is not reef safe and should not be kept with invertebrates or corals.
Handling: Exercise caution when maintaining the tank or handling this species, as its spines deliver a painful venomous sting.
