The Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is a captivating species prized for its dramatic fins and bold patterning. This tiny specimen is ideal for hobbyists who have experience with venomous marine fish and can provide the necessary care.
Care Level: Advanced. Due to its venomous spines and specialised care needs, the Red Lionfish is recommended for experienced keepers only.
Temperament: Predatory and territorial. It may prey on smaller tankmates and should be housed with compatible species that are too large to be considered prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Safety: No. The Red Lionfish is not reef safe as it may consume small invertebrates and fish, and its venomous spines pose a risk to other inhabitants and handlers.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting is required.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural reef conditions without stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to allow the lionfish to establish territory and feel secure.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in captivity.
Handling Precautions: Exercise extreme caution when maintaining the tank or handling the fish due to venomous spines that can cause painful stings.
