Pterois radiata, commonly known as the Radiata Lionfish, is a visually impressive scorpionfish native to the Indo-Pacific region. Recognisable by its elongated fin rays and striking banded pattern, this species adds a dramatic focal point to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its venomous spines and specialised feeding habits, it is recommended for experienced keepers.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Radiata Lionfish is generally solitary and can be territorial. It is predatory and will consume smaller fish and invertebrates, so tank mates should be chosen with caution. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is advised.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Handling: Exercise caution when handling due to venomous dorsal spines. Use appropriate tools and protective equipment.
With proper care, the Radiata Lionfish can be a captivating and rewarding addition to a well-established marine aquarium.
