Pterois mombasae, commonly known as the Mombasa Lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish native to the Western Indian Ocean. This large specimen is prized for its ornate fins and distinctive striped pattern, making it a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Due to its venomous spines and specific husbandry needs, the Mombasa Lionfish is recommended for experienced aquarists only.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally solitary and can be territorial. It is predatory and may consume smaller tankmates, so compatibility with similarly sized or robust fish is advised. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Pterois mombasae thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be regular but controlled to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding spots created by live rock formations.
Reef Safety: No. Due to their predatory behaviour and venomous spines, they are not suitable for reef tanks containing invertebrates or small fish.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are ideal to mimic their natural habitat without causing stress.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean, including the coastal waters near Mombasa, Kenya.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
