Salarias ceramensis is a fascinating species of combtooth blenny native to the Indo-Pacific region. This marine fish is prized for its active behaviour and algae-grazing habits, making it a valuable addition to many reef and marine aquariums.
Available in various sizes, Salarias ceramensis adapts well to captive conditions when provided with appropriate care. It is generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other reef-safe species, though care should be taken when housing with very small or timid fish.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Peaceful and active, suitable for community reef tanks.
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous; feeds on algae and biofilm. Supplement diet with high-quality marine algae sheets and occasional meaty foods.
- Minimum Tank Size: Recommended minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and territories.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4.
- Lighting and Flow: Moderate lighting to encourage natural algae growth; moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
- Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and algae growth for grazing and shelter.
Compatibility
Salarias ceramensis is reef safe and generally compatible with other peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive or very territorial species to reduce stress.
Additional Notes
This species is not commonly tank-bred, so wild-caught specimens may be more prevalent. Acclimate carefully to reduce stress and ensure long-term health.
