The Scolymia australis, commonly referred to as the Reverse Bleeding Apple coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid colouration and distinctive reverse bleeding pattern. This Tank-Bred frag is cultivated under optimal conditions, ensuring robust health and vibrant pigmentation, making it an excellent addition to marine reef aquariums.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, ideally using LED or T5 fixtures that provide a balanced spectrum. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to facilitate nutrient exchange without causing tissue damage.
- Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork where it can expand fully without competition. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive neighbours to prevent stinging.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels to support skeletal growth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
This coral is reef safe with adequate spacing, as it can extend sweeper tentacles that may harm nearby corals. It is compatible with peaceful reef inhabitants and benefits from a well-established reef environment.
Feeding
While photosynthetic, Scolymia australis benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly to promote growth and vibrancy.
