Myripristis hexagona, commonly known as the large squirrelfish, is a visually stunning addition to mature marine aquariums. Recognisable by its bright red body and distinctive hexagonal patterning, this species is primarily nocturnal and thrives in environments that mimic its natural reef habitat.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This fish requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy and may hide during daylight hours. Best kept with non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with its natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices to simulate natural shelter.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to accommodate its nocturnal nature. Moderate water flow replicates reef conditions and supports overall health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may prey on small invertebrates or fish fry.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 inches).
